Smart Power was first released by Island Press in 2009 and was designed to serve as a guidebook to transformation of the utilty industry in clear, understandable prose. The book provides an in-depth look at the challenges electric utilities face due to the combined impacts of climate change, the smart grid, and energy efficiency policies. To address these policy and business challenges, Dr. Peter Fox-Penner examines strategies for the development of energy efficient business models for the utility industry. Smart Power is widely viewed in the U.S. and abroad as a top resource for the entire utility industry, from students to utility CEOs. Due to this success, in 2014 Island Press released an anniversary edition with new forewords by industry leaders.

Dr. Peter Fox-Penner is a Professor of the Practice at the Boston University Questrom School of Business where he is leading the creation of a University-wide Institute for Sustainable Energy.  He is also an academic advisor to The Brattle Group, an economic and financial consulting firm, and chief strategy officer of Energy Impact Partners, a private equity firm.

Dr. Fox-Penner is an internationally-recognized authority on energy and electric power industry issues. His background includes service as a senior official in the U.S. Department of Energy and the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy as well as staff positions in the Illinois Governor’s office.  He is the author of four books and numerous articles on energy policy and the electric power industry.

Will Allen, safety for the Pittsburgh Steelers, visited The Brattle Group in February 2015 to  shadow Peter for two days.  This “externship” was organized by the National Football League Players’ Association (NFLPA), which provides players with onsite experiences for three weeks in the winter to help navigate their post-NFL career.  Will is interested in energy and sustainability issues and hopes to attend business school post-NFL.

During his visit at Brattle, Will was introduced around the office and sat in on several presentations that discussed energy sector modeling, distributed generation, and storage technologies.  Will’s passion for sustainability was clear as he discussed the themes of Peter’s book, Smart Power. After his time at Brattle wrapped up, Will expressed tremendous gratitude for the opportunity:

“I greatly appreciate everyone at the Brattle Group. I am very thankful that you opened your doors. The experience was great and I learned a lot ... Peter, you are great teacher, entrepreneur and visionary ... I learned so much about business, energy, strategic development and what's to come in the energy sector.”
